Thirst is not a reliable way to tell if you need water. You will not start feeling thirsty until you have already lost about 2 percent of body weight, enough to hurt performance. And if you stop drinking water once your thirst is satisfied, you will get only about half the amount you need.

Body Mass Index

During meditation your attention is immersed, vibrating at a single point. Studies show that, over time, anabolic steroids can indeed take a heavy toll on a person's health. The abuse of oral or injectable steroids is associated with higher risks for heart attacks and strokes, and the abuse of most oral steroids is associated with increased risk for liver problems.

When you start with enough muscle glycogen, protein supplies about 5 percent of energy. Otherwise it may supply up to 10 percent.

But how much do you really know about this essential nutrient? It isn't as simple as eating 0.8 gram per pound of bodyweight (or 1 gram . . . or 2 grams). A multitude of factors affect how digestible and usable a protein is, as well as how the body will use it, whether for building or for stoking its furnace.

Stay Active

Your workout must be identical to the upcoming event to deplete the right muscles. Then eat a high-carbohydrate diet (70-80 percent carbs, 10 to15 percent fat, 10-15 percent protein) and do little or no exercise starting three days before your event. Muscles loaded with unused glycogen will be available to work for longer periods of time during competition.

Use a carbohydrate strategy to stay energized and perform at your best: Eat carbohydrates for at least several days before exercise/competition, so you start with glycogen-loaded muscles.

No pain, no gain. New studies show that even short bouts of activity can increase your fitness level, especially if you're new at working out. Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions.

Women Issues

Wear protective gear. This includes a cup for contact sports, gloves and a helmet for cycling, and full gear for in line skating. Experts say the helmet is the most important but least worn piece of safety equipment. There are many different kinds of antioxidants and they work together to help fight the harmful effects of free radicals.

Both creatine and androstenedione are classified as supplements under the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994 and are available over the counter to anyone. Nevertheless, some drug chains and health food outlets are refusing to stock androstenedione because of possible health risks.

Be A Winner

What you eat several days before endurance activities affects performance. Your food the morning of a sports competition can ward off hunger, keep blood sugar levels adequate and aid hydration. Avoid high protein or high fat foods on the day of an event, as these can stress the kidneys and take a long time to digest.

Steroids

But how much do you really know about this essential nutrient? It isn't as simple as eating 0.8 gram per pound of bodyweight (or 1 gram . . . or 2 grams). Cool water is the best fluid to keep you hydrated during workouts or events lasting an hour or less. Sports drinks (i.e., 6 to 10 percent carbohydrates) are useful for longer events. Most of these types of drinks should be diluted approximately 50 percent with water.

When you are flattened by the stomach flu, you may lose fluid through vomit and diarrhea. (Gastrointestinal illness is a major cause of dehydration, but anything, food poisoning or an alcohol overload, for example that makes you throw up several times in a short period of time can dehydrate you.) And if you're spending that much time getting acquainted with the toilet, you probably will not feel like eating or drinking anything.

Workout Partner

You can make the most of your athletic talents and gain more strength, power and endurance when you train. Base your diet on a variety of factors including your age, size and physical condition; and the type of exercise you are doing.
